The Preamble of the U. S. Constitution

This is the Preamble of the constitution:

"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

These remarkable words completely outline the standards and goals that the founding fathers wanted for citizens of the U. S. To me, “We the People” means that the framers of our country intended for American citizens to be unified so they would be able to protect themselves from their own government, giving all citizens a say in how they wanted their country governed. “Establish justice" means that they were creating a justice system that would be fair to all citizens. “Insure domestic tranquility” implies that the government will keep the peace among the people and keep them safe. “Provide for the common defense” gives the government permission to have an active military or militia. “Promote the general welfare” is simple, promoting health and safety for all citizens is the government’s concern. “Secure the blessings of liberty and our posterity” means that the government takes the necessary steps to insure future generations of their own personal freedoms. Revisiting the five functions can help our country develop into the way the framers intended for this nation to be.

I don't know about you, but every history or english teacher I had in grade school used "School House Rock" in some way or another. This video does a great job describing why the Constitution is important and also helps to explain what the preamble means.
